On 22 of May 2011, a landslide occurred at Hulu Langat, Selangor caused the death of 16 people. Prior to that, since January 2011 several landslides were occurred at Sandakan, Sabah. It was reported that the lanslide began on 25 January 2011 at Jalan Bukara and by the time it was started, like domino, it attacked another locations in Sandakan which resulted the closure of one lane from Jalan Bukara to main road to Sandakan town. Eventhough it was a minor landslide, but some of the landslide caused death. In which on 30 January 2011, a shop house at Jalan Bukara located in less than one minute travel from the first location was colapsed.
As usual, within one week from the date of event, several theories, caused of failure and other reports were produced by expert or anyone who try to become expert in landslide. All ‘instant experts’ will produce their opinion in the dark. Why? Because all opinion, finding or whatever story came out from their views and perceptions, will make others jump into conclusion without waiting for proper landslide forensic investigation report. Retrogressive failure, geological factor, lack of maintenance, development without prior approval and multiplicity of theories were formed. The most unpleasant is when some of the improper findings ‘expert’ will point fingers to others, especially to the authority, without accurate facts and even, some of them tried to escape from their responsibility rather than refer to the proper authority. I think these phenomenons all the time happened in Malaysia and I call these “instant expert phenomena”. Miserably, after 2/3 weeks all became cool and nobody care about it, silent and everything seems back to normal and the in charge authority will do their job without nobody concern anymore.
